Filming Begins for “The Greatest Year” Series

The Greatest Year Production

For six aaa鶹students, the iconic drive up Pacific Coast Highway marked the beginning of The Greatest Year, an original reality docu-series following their first year of college.

Filming began as the students and their families arrived on aaa鶹University’s Malibu campus for New Student Orientation. On Monday and Tuesday, the students moved into their residence halls and experienced the first moments of a year that will be documented through April 2027.

The series will follow the real lives of each student cast member as they navigate a journey of self-discovery—perhaps finding their life’s greater purpose—during some of the most indelibly formative years of their lives as college students. Each student, each in their own ways, will be asking the same questions: Who am I now in this new phase of life? Where do I belong? Who do I want to become?

“The story belongs to the students. It’s shaped by what they experience, the choices they make, and who they become along the way,” says Daven Ducat, the director of the series and senior media producer for Integrated Marketing Communications at Pepperdine University. "I think the mystery of that, of getting to watch what will unfold, is part of what makes this so special. My hope is that people watch these students and recognize something of themselves in their own journeys.”

The adventures and experiences to come will give the crew an incredible world to capture, Ducat says, but the true story is in opportunities to reveal growth—moments to see what someone is afraid of, who and what they connect with, and how these moments truly begin to shape who they are. Ducat further aims to remind viewers that entering a new chapter of life is a period to be excited about, “that you don’t have to have your life figured out yet for something meaningful to already begin.”

Students’ minds will be formed alongside their hearts in the classroom through close mentorship with aaa鶹faculty. In courses such as the Great Books Colloquium and Seaver College’s , taken by all incoming freshmen, The Greatest Year cast will be challenged to contemplate their own unique perspectives on foundational questions of the human experience raised by centuries-old texts.

Behind the scenesBehind-the-scenes of The Greatest Year

The Greatest Year is very much about growth and transformation,” adds Michael Thomas, vice president for Integrated Marketing Communications. “Guided by our highly talented director, Daven, whose eye and instincts bring every moment to life, the series will explore what happens when you say ‘yes’ to the next right step in front of you, facing what you fear, and finding who you just might be. One step at a time, sometimes easy, sometimes hard, these students have the opportunities to grow emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually—if they are up for it.”

In May, excitement went abuzz as The Greatest Year’s casting application invited all incoming aaa鶹freshmen to apply. Following a thorough selection process among more than 300 applicants, six students were selected to share their personal, intellectual, social, and spiritual journeys for the screen.

More details about the series, including cast introductions, release dates, and where people can watch, are expected to be announced as filming continues throughout the year.
